In 1955 these vans were employed on B.R.’s pioneering Motorail/Car Carrier trains between York and Kings Cross. To the loco’s left can be seen a recently refurbished Class 101 d.m.u. in the futuristic, but impractical, white and blue stripe West Yorkshire P.T.E. livery. “Alycidon” is at the helm of the 10.39 Newcastle – Kings Cross service. The day after this photo was taken the loco was at B.R.E.L. Doncaster works, its no.2 engine was reported as “knocking and noisy” (suspected piston break up). The defective engine (433) was subsequently replaced by 435; this swap operation enabled the loco to return to service with the minimum of delay.
